Big Banks Creating Digital Wallet to Rival Apple Pay

According to the Wall Street Journal, these banks will lead the projects with support from payment giants Mastercard (MA) and Visa (V). The digital wallet will be run by Early Warning Services LLC, a joint venture run by the banks that run the Zelle Payments Network. Banks are making their first foray into the digital wallet market with this plan. Statista data show that PayPal had more than 400 million active wallets in 2022, despite a decline in year-over-year growth since the pandemic began. Despite not supporting Android mobile devices, Apple Pay has over 500 million active users. Following the news, the price of PayPal's stock (PYPL) dropped by 2%, but it eventually rose.

Technology Startups See Private Market Valuations Plunge

The Financial Times reported earlier this year that tech start-ups that depend on venture capital and wealthy tech investors have had to reevaluate their growth strategies as that funding has decreased. In an effort to save money, many startups have begun firing employees in addition to seeking out alternative forms of financing. The lack of capital funding put pressure on start-up market values on its own. As laid-off workers sell, these values have fallen even further. Depending on their vesting and/or ownership agreements, some of those employees have been forced to sell, frequently within 60 days of their departure date.

Netflix Leads Streaming Stocks Lower

Despite investors' hopes that the new ad tier would attract a sizable audience, the company reportedly only managed to attract around 80% of its anticipated audience. Netflix may be forced to lower the prices it charges for ads due to the poor performance. It wanted a cost per thousand impressions (CPM) of $55, which was higher than Disney+'s $50 CPM. Netflix is also being criticized by advertisers for not launching its own market campaign for the ad-supported tier. Despite a 67% increase in the previous six months, Netflix shares have fallen 51% so far this year. The shares of Paramount Global (PARA) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) both declined by approximately 9% yesterday. The stock price of Disney (DIS) was down about 4%.
